Care For Granite, Marble, Limestone, Travertine

And Other Natural Stones

The two most important things you do to care for granite, limestone, travertine, slate, marble, onyx and other natural stones are:

  1. Remove any dust, grit, and sand from the stones surface.

  2. Clean up accidental spills as soon as possible.

Care For Granite and Stone

Stone, Granite, Marble, Limestone, & Travertine Floor Care

  • PROTECT your natural stone floors near entry ways with non slip mats or area rugs. This helps remove loose dirt or sand from shoes.
  • FREQUENT dust mopping, vacuuming, and sweeping of your natural stone floors IS A MUST! This prevents the accumulation of grit and grime. It also slows the rate of deterioration caused by foot traffic grinding in dirt, sand, or grit.
  • WET MOP using a mild vegetable soap and water solution OR a stone cleaner made especially for stone floors. Many stone pros believe that damp mopping with plain water every day keeps your stone floor clean. Most of us don't mop everyday - who has the time! Once a week, use a floor cleaner made for stone floors.
  • QUICK DAILY cleanings should be accompanied by PERIODIC DEEP cleanings. How often should you deep clean your stone? Depends on the usage. Children or pets? More frequent deep cleanings are better!
  • WIPE UP SPILLS ASAP. This is simply wiping up any accidental spills right away. If you get a stain, attend to it as soon as possible with a slightly stronger solution of detergent. If the detergent cleaner is unsuccessful or the stain sets in, use a poultice.

Care For Granite & Natural Stone Countertops

  • USE COASTER OR PLACEMATS on your natural stone surfaces. This is especially true for marbles, travertines, onyx and limestone.
  • RINSE WELL AND THEN DRY your natural stone surface after washing. Drying gets rid of streaks on dark granites! Microfiber cleaning cloths are very effective for drying your stone, especially darker stones. Streak free finish and NO lint is left behind! These work great on ALL stones and colors.
  • Clean your tops everyday with a stone friendly cleaner.
  • WIPE UP SPILLS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Avoid etches and stains. If you get a stain, attend to it as soon as possible with a slightly stronger solution of detergent. If the detergent cleaner is unsuccessful or the stain sets in, use a poultice.

The DONT'S of Natural Stone Care

  • DON"T use vinegar, lemon juice, or any harsh cleaners on your stone.
  • DON'T use harsh cleaners such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub & tile cleaners.
  • DON'T use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers.
  • DON'T mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas.
  • DON'T ever mix chemicals together unless directions specifically instruct you to do so.
