How To Compare The Cost of Granite

Review Your Granite Estimates

Once your bids are in, do you know how to compare the cost of granite between fabricators? Some granite estimates include a free sink sink while other fabricators quote a really low price per square foot yet their bid comes in a little higher. Some throw one GRAND TOTAL at you and others itemize down to the amount of caulk they're using!

Some fabricators itemize the cost of granite & stone. Others don't - just a grand total is written. If they don't itemize, just divide the total cost by your square footage paying close attention to what's included... kitchen sink, faucet, tear out, outlets, cook top & sink hole cutouts, etc. Keep everything LEVEL between bids!

Take into account anything free. One offers a free sink and the other doesn't? Add at least $250 to the one who doesn't! Here's how to compare bid against bid:

1. Write down the total cost of the material.


2. Write down the total cost of edging.


3. Write down the total cost of labor. (if it's not already included elsewhere)


4. Write down the total cost of arches and any cut outs for outlets, cook tops, and sinks.


5. Add the above numbers together.


6. Divide this number by your square footage. This will give you the actual cost per square foot.


7. Do this separately for each bid you receive to compare granite cost.

Hints & Tips

• Make sure your bids are for the same stone.
• Make sure your bids are for the same edge detail, layout, and design.
• If possible, do not add in the cost for your sinks and faucets.
  Compare these items separately. UNLESS...
• ... one fabricator is adding in a free sink. Then add $250 to the cost of the fabricator who isn't.
• Do not add in the cost of a tear out. Not all companies offer this service.
